Woody Guthrie—famous singer, storyteller, songwriter, and artist—was born and raised about an hour outside of Tulsa in a small town named Okemah, but this museum dedicated to his life and legend resides right here in the heart of Tulsa, simply because it was felt that more people would be able to learn his story in our larger city. The Woody Guthrie Center in Tulsa, OK pays homage to music and art, offering exhibits and artifacts that tell the story of our home-grown poet, musician, and artist. Fans of the man, or simply those who love music, will appreciate a chance to explore music history one song at a time. Today, we at StayInTulsaOK invite our guests to listen to the music made by an all-American hero, perhaps coming home to your vacation sanctuary after to listen to more of his works in comfort and style.
Located at 102 Reconciliation Way, Open Wednesday through Sunday from 10 AM to 6 PM
It’s not hard to pick out the Woody Guthrie Center in a crowd of brick buildings, mostly due to the large mural painted on its side, a mural that depicts the man himself and the title to his most famous song, “This Land Is Your Land.” Once inside, visitors can expect to see a short 15-minute reel that tells a bit of his life story and artifacts of his that include his guitar, his banjo, and many more instruments that he used during his all-too-short lifespan. The exhibits in this museum grow larger every year as more Woody paraphernalia is discovered and released, and it is by no way limited to only the man himself. The museum offers up exhibits that include some of our nation’s top performers as well as telling the story of our home state; the exhibit regarding the Dust Bowl is truly fascinating! Also featuring exhibits about poetry, art, and the 1960s Peace Movement, the museum is sure to speak to your hippie soul, loudly and with lots of flowers and love.
